Nitrogen availability and leaching during the terrestrial phase in a v rzea forest of the Central Amazon floodplain

چکیده
Availability and leaching of dissolved inorganic N (DIN = NH4 + NO3) in soil were measured in a periodically flooded forest of the Central Amazon floodplain (v rzea) during one terrestrial phase. Special emphasis was on the effects of a legume and a nonlegume tree species. NH4-N accounted for more than 85% of DIN even at the end of the terrestrial phase although it decreased throughout the experimental period. While extractable NO3 -N was always low in the soil (less than 15% of DIN), the amount of leached NO3 -N was in the same range as NH4-N. Under the legume trees mean DIN contents of the topsoil were higher than under the non-legume trees. DIN leaching from the topsoil (0– 20 cm) was significantly higher under the legume trees than at the other sites, also indicating a higher N availability. Therefore, despite considerable leaching legume trees may be an important source of N supporting a high biomass production of the v rzea forest.

Water quality changes in floodplain lakes due to the Amazon River flood pulse: Lago Grande de Curuaí (Pará).
Assurance of water quality for human consumption is essential for public health policies. In the Amazon floodplain, the seasonal water level variation causes periodic flooding of marginal areas that are usually used for settlements, agriculture and livestock. Therefore, the exchange of materials between the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystem affects the proportion of suspended and dissolved comp...

Nitrate leaching from agricultural lands can pollute groundwater, and the degree of pollution caused significantly depends on agricultural practices implemented on farms. Field studies required to evaluate the effects of various agricultural management strategies on nitrate leaching are expensive and time consuming. As a result, it is suggested to use crop models to simulate the effects of mana...

Leaf size indices of the tree species in the peatland of Agusan del Sur in Mindanao in Philippines was examined to deduce the variation of forest structure and observed forest zonation. Using raunkiaer and webb’s leaf size classification, the leaf morphometrics of seven tree species consistently found on the established sampling plots were determined. The species includes Ternstroemia phi...

In this work, we present as investigation of chalcopyrite leaching under different leach conditions for how liquidation and surface of chalcopyrite study using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) to determine the composition of the passivation layer in the surface of chalcopyrite. The study of chalcopyrite dissolution were in H2SO4 solution systems at pH of 1.2, with 5% chalcopyrite concentrate ...

Our recent findings that floodplain ecosystems harbor the most fragile forests of the Amazon (1) was seen by Schöngart et al. (2) as an oversimplification of a complex ecosystem. They argue that the majority of floodplain forests are associated with fertile soils, and should therefore be highly resilient. Indeed, the differences between nutrient-rich white-water and nutrient-poor black-water sy...
